Located in the northeastern portion of the island of Leyte. Tacloban City is the Capital of Leyte Province and one of the island provinces in Eastern Visayas. Tacloban's topographical location is at 110 degrees 14'36" north latitude and about 125 east longitude, situated 360 miles southwest of Manila. Land classification of Tacloban City as generally categorized by CENRO, DENR, are: Alienable and Disposable (A&D) Lands-47.61%; Forest Land-50.48% and Civil Reservations-1.55%.

Tacloban's original land area was 10,297.29 hectares. A survey in 1977 by the Bureau of Lands disclosed that a certain portion of the municipality of Babatngon was actually a part of Tacloban City. Barangay Sta. Elena, an adjacent barangay Babatngon increased its land area by 556 hectares, thus increasing the city's total land area. In 2004, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) disclosed that the total land area of Tacloban, as submitted in Resolution No. 99-001 and reiterated under Circular Letter No. 2001-21, is now 20,172 has., which included the islands within the territorial bounds of the city.

Tacloban City as eight (8) soil types. Naga-naga Clay, Tacloban Clay, Caibaan Clay, Pawing Silt, Caibaan Clay Loam, Pawing Silt Loam, Calanipawan Clay Loam, Nulatula clay and Sta. Elena Clay Loam. The City Proper is predominantly of Pawing Silt Loam and the Naga-Naga Clay in the interior area.
