Tacloban City – Due to the cooperativism and positive response of the Local government of Tacloban City headed by its Mayor Alfred S. Romualdez “Tacloban was made as the first designer city of Gawad Kalinga in the Visayas”, this was disclosed by Gawad Kalinga Chairman Tony Meloto during his talk at the Gawad Kalinga (GK) TACLOBAN : a Designer City Launching held recently at Balyuan Convention Center.
According to Chairman Meloto, being a GK designer city, 15,000 houses in several communities will be built in the city of Tacloban beautiful and colorful, everyone who will live in that village will be beautiful, BAWAL ang pangit (uglies not allowed), pangit ang ugali (ugly attitude), pangit na gawa (ugly act), pangit na bahay (ugly house) at pangit na communidad (ugly community) BAWAL. He believes that Tacloban City can make a difference by showing the whole world that we are ONE as a Filipino, helping another FILIPINO to prosper.

I am happy to know Meloto further said that you have a Mayor in the name of Mayor Alfred Romualdez who has the heart, passion, the brains and good looking at that, who is supportive of the program. With a cooperative leader like Mayor Romualdez I call on Taclobanon to give its 100% cooperation in order to have Tacloban a FREE slum city by year 2024.
Meloto further elaborated, that the Filipino’s have not loved our country enough, simply becoz of our affiliation to a group, organization or school. That could have been the reason why we can never build our nation Meloto said.
Its about time, we transcend and be ONE people, a FILIPINO. Let’s set aside politics, let’s be ONE, just like what Singapore prime minister Lee Kuan Yu said this is not about me, this is about SINGAPORE. Hope that each Filipino will say: this is not about me but this is about the Philippines and being a Filipino, Meloto further added.
Lets give way to solidarity as one nation, be ONE FILIPINO to the rest of the world. Gawad Kalinga and Tacloban City government thru its City Mayor Alfred Romualdez has a common vision and aims of having squatter FREE and slum FREE Tacloban by 2024 Meloto said.
The Gawad Kalinga Community Infrastructure Program initially had its start off housing project at Cabalawan called the Solis Legacy GK Village . The Gawad Kalinga , Tacloban City government, sponsors and the beneficiaries of the project itself intends to build a community having 30 to 35 houses built at half a hectare lot donated by the Solis Family represented by Atty. Vicente Solis.
Ones built, GK not only foresee the infrastructure aspect of building a house and community but likewise look into its community health phase where every child, adult and elderly thrive optimally through capacity enhancement, health education, service and local health system development geared towards Building a Healthy communities and building a Healthy nation!
GK likewise have its child & youth development feature, a GK environment portion, empowerment & productivity programs for every community that they built.
Tacloban: a designer city according to GK has its vision of freeing the city of Tacloban of informal settlers in the future. Its a priority program of Mayor Alfred S. Romualdez and First Lady Cristina Romualdez.
Building communities to end poverty. “Kasali Kami Dyan – Walang Iwanan” The Launching of TACLOBAN: a designer City ended with the signing of Memorandum of Agreement with GK represented by its founder Tony Meloto, Mayor Alfred Romualdez for Tacloban, Atty. Vicente Solis for the land donation and other stakeholders responsible for the GK project.
